Question de métier - Sem automation

“BOIS & TECHNIQUES” magazine / Special edition « Xylexpo Milan » exhibition - May 2008

Since 1977, the SEM AUTOMATION facility established in Caussade (France) specializes in the design and the setting-up of equipment for the wood primary processing industry (conveyors, trunk pickers, debarkers, crosscutting benches, measuring devices, log conveyors, waste belts, shredders, wood-peeling machines, sorting belts, cart loading facilities, woodboard pickers, log-splitters, automated nailing machines for pallets, etc). At the Xylexpo Milan Fair, we exhibit a universal pre-centring / centring device for laser measurements, adaptable on any type of wood-peeling machine, whose technical features are as follows:

A Pre-centring device :

  • Pre-centring device with 2 independent V-blocks allowing to centre the logs presenting conicities.
Loading  by 2 hydraulically-powered arms, adapted to the log diameters.
Equipped with a jolting system for the centring of the log.
Inlet height in the pre-centring device: 930 mm
Singulation height of your chains: 940/950 mm

A laser-guided centring device fitted with :

  • Two jaw clamp spindles for turning each log
Three laser units for measuring variations in log circumference during the rotation.
Cabinet containing automatic unit for calculating the largest diameter. An optimization axe can then be determined.
Each spindle moves independently in X and Y axes to ensure optimal positioning of the peeling axis.
    Centring accuracy  : ± 5 mm maxi

“LE BOIS INTERNATIONAL” magazine / Special edition « Trunks »
January 2008

Since 1977  the SEM AUTOMATION facility established in Caussade (France) specializes in the conception of equipments intended for the wood transformation industry.
When it comes to  wood peeling machines for light packaging, measuring devices  for sawmills, debarkers, nailing machines for pallets, cutting-off benches, log cutter-splitter units , evacuation belts, sorting belts, setting out in carts,  log  conveyors, etc., SEM Automation offers a global «turnkey» concept in automated flows.

For the transformation of the trunks,  SEM Automation analyses the direction  of the wood flow with an adapted conveying and an automated management post for all stages, in order to follow each trunk or log on its way to the transformation post.

Recently,  SEM Automation has successfully carried out the complete setting up of a new facility in Italy (Mecwood Srl) including the whole set of  operations from the trunk loading to the setting out in carts of the woodboards and the  waste management
(sawdust, barks and off-cuts) as follows:

  • Trunk storage deck
    Trunk pickers
    Measuring device
    Debarking
    Singulation chain
    Cutting-off
Log conveying to the storage chains
Wood singulation chain in front of each wood transformation post

Every operation is automated and allows the identification and call of each trunk by type of machine. The management of the trunks is centralized on the splitting command post. The waste evacuation is done with vibrating  belts, band belts or scrapper belts. After being transformed, the wood is sorted out on sorting belts according to well-defined criteria.

Once the flow is over, and in some applications such as wood boards, the setting out in carts and the management of the filled and emptied carts are done automatically.
